Richmond Rugby FC names city all-star teams

The Richmond Rugby Football Club has announced the sixth annual Maurice Smith City of Richmond all-stars for the 2015-16 season.

The Senior Boys team is comprised of athletes from the McRoberts Strikers, Cambie Crusaders and McMath Wildcats.

McRoberts finished fourth in the AA-Tier 2 provincial championships in Abbotsford, losing to eventual champions LV Rogers of Nelson in the semi-finals.

The McMath Wildcats, featuring a team comprised of mostly grade 10s and 11s, qualified for their first ever B.C. tournament berth, finishing seventh place at the AA-Tier 2 level by defeating DW Poppy of Langley.

The Cambie Crusaders finished third in the Lower Mainland at the Tier-2 level, falling to Burnaby Central in the district semi-finals. All three schools will look to continue their winning ways in the Lower Mainland Tier-1 league next season.

Senior Boys All-Star Team: Ethan Bacungan (Cambie Crusaders, Prop) Rhys Daniels, (McRoberts Strikers, #8), Noah Kamamura (McRoberts Strikers, Centre), Perrin Leung (McRoberts Strikers, Scrum Half), Jacob Lorenz )McMath Wildcats, Fly Half), Omeid Niyaz (Cambie Crusaders, Scrum Half), Spencer Normann (McMath Wildcats, #8), Michael Rankin (McRoberts Strikers, Flanker), Jordan Roberts (McMath Wildcats, Centre), Will Rogers (McMath Wildcats, Flanker), Sheldon Ronse (McRoberts Strikers, Fly Half), Alek Shriver (McMath Wildcats, Prop).

The Senior Girls team includes athletes from Steveston-London, McMath, McRoberts and McNair.

The McRoberts Strikers finished a banner year for the program winning their second Lower Mainland-AA championship in the school’s history. The seven-a-side program also won the Bowl (placing ninth in the province) at the provincial tournament in Victoria. While nearly half of the team’s starting line-up is graduating, the Strikers, led by recent Team BC selection Valerie Wideski, will look to qualify for the 15-a-side provincial tournament in 2017.

After graduating several starters in 2015, The McMath Wildcats had a rebuilding year, starting a line-up full of young players at the Grade 9 level. However, the team persevered against their older and more experienced competition finishing in fourth place in the Lower Mainland-AAA competition. The school placed two girls (Alex Strandt and Kate Fedoruk) on the recent Vancouver And Area Under-16 Provincial Regional team.

Senior Girls All-Star Team: Kaitlyn Agda (McRoberts Strikers, Full Back), Kate Fedoruk (McMath Wildcats, Prop), Tatum Friegang (McRoberts Strikers, Scrum Half), Jaya Gill (McRoberts Strikers, Lock), Katarina Kozij (McMath Wildcats, Lock), Thalia Puac (McRoberts Strikers, Fly Half), Danielle Robertson (McNair Marlins, Prop), Alex Strandt (McMath Wildcats, Lock), Valerie Wideski (Steveston-London Sharks, #8), Zandalee Uyeyama (McMath Wildcats, #8).

The Junior Boys team features athletes from McRoberts and McMath, and is based on play from the Vancouver & District fall seven-a-side league (McRoberts) and spring fifteen-a-side league (McMath).

Many of the McMath Wildcats selected were standout players for the school’s Senior Boy’s team in the spring as well.
