Richmond record-breakers set new records, in their 70s and 80s

Avril Douglas and Akram Khan broke their age group records in the FYC 8K in Richmond

Have ever wondered how fast you can you run eight kilometres?

Well, two members of the Richmond-based Forever Young Club (FYC) broke their respective age group race records at the recent FYC 8K annual run/jog/walk.

In the 75 – 79 age category, Avril Douglas ran 48 minutes and in the 80 – 84 age category, Akram Khan ran the distance in 49 minutes.

But it wasn’t the first time Douglas has grabbed the limelight, event organizer John Young said she is a “very accomplished track star, world age-group record holder, Richmond Wall of Famer, and long-time Kajak coach.”

While Khan, 80, started running much later in life and has quickly developed an “incredible running record” in Lower Mainland road events, usually winning his age group wherever he enters.
