The 2002 Richmond Islanders were just happy to be back playing tournament softball again, after more than a year without competing due to COVID.
So to actually come out swinging, quite literally, and win their home club’s Cat Wheatley Memorial last weekend was something special.
A total of 13 teams entered their category, with some stiff opposition to face.
However, the Islanders overcame a four-run deficit in the semi-finals, with a five-run final inning against the 04 Fury.
The gold-medal match produced an exciting game against the 02 Fury, with the title being won with a walk-off hit in the bottom of the seventh to break the tie.
