Richmond golfers dominate podium with gold & silver finish at B.C Summer Games

Richmond athletes turned in some outstanding performances at last weekend B.C. Summer Games in Surrey. The multi-sport event, which takes place every two years, featured over 2300 athletes from across the province competing at 20 sports venues.

The multi-sport event, which takes place every two years, featured over 2300 athletes from across the province competing at 20 sports venues. With an average age of 14, the B.C. Games are a training ground for the best up-and-coming athletes in the province.

Twenty-five members of Canada's 2012 Summer Olympics team are B.C Games alumni.

Among the highlights accomplished by Richmond athletes was Special Olympian Magnus Batara being a major force in the swimming competition with four gold medals.

Local athletes also dominated the boys golf competition with Curtis Chan and Diego San Pedro finishing first and second respectively.

In athletics, Alon Aminov leaped to a gold medal in the boys triple jump.

It was also a golden weekend for five Richmond soccer players as members of the Fraser River Delta boys team.

Here is a rundown of the medal winners as provided by the B.C. Summer Games.

Athletics

Alon Aminov (boys triple jump, gold medal). Meghan Higashitani (girls 4x100 relay, bronze medal). Matthew Lai (Special Olympics 400 metres, bronze medal).

Baseball

Fraser River Delta (bronze medal - Kieran Moon, Isaiah Hayes, Spencer Rankin, Mitchell Rennie, Ryan Kleman, Brett Gelz).

Basketball

Vancouver-Squamish (gold medal - Randy Coutts). Fraser River Delta (silver medal - Darren Pun, Lambert Pajayon, Albert Ho, Ido Gortler, Marko Stojonovic, Bernard Lim).

Golf

Curtis Chan (boys, gold medal), Diego San Pedro (boys silver medal).

Lacrosse (box)

Fraser River Delta (bronze medal - Chandler Bradley, Sahawna Baker).

Sailing

Ryan Wood (silver medal, Boys/Girls Optimist Blue Feet).

Boys Soccer

Fraser River Delta (gold medal - Jayden Jordan, Ethan Mangilit, Justyn Sandhu, Peiyu Song, Andrew Yang).

Swimming

Nicole Welsh (girls 400 metre individual medley, bronze medal). Jaylene Berry (girls 200 metre breaststroke, silver medal). Magnus Batara (Special Olympics 50 metre backstroke, gold medal, Special Olympics 100 metre breaststroke, gold medal; Special Olympics, 100 metre freestyle, gold medal; Special Olympics 100 metre backstroke, gold medal). Cullen Yee (Special Olympics 50 metre freestyle, silver medal).

Synchronized Swimming

Michelle Ko (bronze medal - Tier 2/3 team event).

The 2014 B.C. Summer Games will take place in Nanaimo.
