It’s going to be a short commute for Cam Overby’s pending junior lacrosse career.
The standout goalie with the Richmond Roadrunners organization was selected seventh overall by the Delta Islanders in Sunday’s B.C. Junior “A” Lacrosse League Entry Draft. Last summer, the McMath secondary Grade 11 student helped Team B.C. win gold at the Midget National Championships. He also played in six games a call-up with the Roadrunners Intermediate “A’ team where he will be a full-time player for the next two seasons.
The Islanders were well aware of Overby’s ability, with assistant general manager and head coach Greg Rennie having worked with him when he headed the Richmond Intermediate program for three seasons.
“He practiced with us a lot and even dressed for a few games,” said Rennie. “He was the top goalie in the draft and we were just hoping he was going to be available for us with that pick. Everything worked out the way we hoped it would.”
The draft is for graduated Midget players (born 1998) who played for associations not affiliated with B.C. Junior “A” Lacrosse League teams. The Islanders had four choices in the first round including the No. 1 overall pick which they used to select Semiahmoo Minor Lacrosse standout Tre LeClaire. The right-hander had 22 points in seven games as a call-up with the Roadrunners last season.
Other Richmond products to be selected in the draft include: Kieran Mckay (Langley — 21st overall), Tyler Moxin (New West — 41st overall) and Liam MacIntosh (Burnaby — 43rd overall). Moxin is a two-sport standout who quarterbacked the Hugh Boyd Trojans to the provincial AA football quarter-finals this past season.
