Seniors aged 55 or older can now play “walking soccer.”
Richmond United FC received a donation from Sandhar Trucking and has launched a free walking soccer program for seniors at the Minoru Oval.
The first session was held last week.
The program is designed to be a low-impact event and includes warm-up practice and games run by Richmond United coaches.
“Thanks to RUFC's club sponsor, Sandhar Trucking, there's no cost involved in taking part. Just bring a pair of sneakers, a water bottle and dress for the weather - we'll take care of everything else,” Richmond United posted on social media.
The rules of walking soccer are “simple,” Richmond United explained, with five players per side, no goalkeepers and no running or hard tackling allowed. Players can sub themselves off when they’re tired. The ball stays on the ground throughout the game.
“Fitness, safety and socializing are key,” Richmond United posted.
“Whether you've played soccer before or never kicked a ball in your life, all are welcome and though the program is aimed at seniors, the more the merrier if you're not quite 55!”
There are two more sessions in April – April 23 and 30 from 10 to 11 a.m. at the Minoru Oval (7191 Granville Ave., across from the seniors centre). Walking soccer sessions are also scheduled for four Wednesdays in June: June 4, June 11, June 18 and June 25.
