A trio of Richmond Ravens alumni has helped the Greater Vancouver Comets repeat as provincial champions and they will be back on familiar ice this weekend looking to take their season to nationals.
Greater Vancouver captured the B.C. Midget AAA title by sweeping a best-of-three series from the Fraser Valley Rush. The Comets took the opener 3-0 then clinched the championship with a 2-1 overtime win.
Their roster includes team captain Hannah Green (McMath), second-year Naomi Chong (McNair) and first-year Ashley Morrow of Ladner. All three joined the Comets from the Ravens rep program.
Green will be continuing her career on the blueline with the University of New Brunswick Reds next season. Chong’s 24 regular season goals ranked her second on her team while Morrow notched 22 points in her rookie campaign.
Greater Vancouver will take on Alberta Major Midget Female Hockey League (AFHL) champion St. Albert Slash for the Pacific Regional Championship in another best-of-three series that starts Friday night (5:45 p.m.) at Minoru Arenas. Game two goes Saturday at noon and the teams could also meet Sunday at 1:30 p.m. if a game three is required. The winner will represent the Pacific region at the 2018 ESSO Cup, slated for April 22-28 in Bridgewater, N.S.
It’s a rematch of year ago which saw the Slash prevail.
The Comets finished in first place in the B.C. Female Midget AAA League regular season after a 29-2-1 record. They had a first-round bye in the playoffs and then defeated the Thompson-Okanagan Lakers two straight in the semi-finals. The Rush earned their way to the final after beating the Vancouver Island Seals.
The Rush also had its share of Richmond talent with forwards Katie Chan, Jaden Cherry, Janey Wilson and defenseman Jamie Grinder.
