On Friday, Canadian Olympians, in conjunction with the Richmond Olympic Oval, celebrated Olympic Day with students by engaging in sports and activities promoting the values of the Olympic Movement.
Olympic Day is not only an opportunity for students to discover and try new sports, but also to learn about the Olympic values, and inspire them to adopt and maintain healthy active lifestyles. With over 20 Olympians in attendance, the two events in Richmond and Montreal provided participants the opportunity to engage with their Olympic and sport role models.
Students from Richmond schools enjoyed many sports and activations including athletics, fencing, judo, snowboard, water polo, diving, gymnastics, speed skating, and many more.
“Any chance I get to represent Team Canada in the community is special and being able to participate in Olympic Day is an extra-special opportunity. Sharing the Olympic values and importance of healthy, active living with students is one of the most important things I can do as an Olympic role model,” said swimmer Hillary Caldwell, an Olympic bronze medalist in 2016.
The Canadian Olympic Committee would like to recognize ViaSport, the Richmond Olympic Oval and all provincial sport organizations for their help in making this day possible.
International Olympic Day is celebrated worldwide annually on or around June 23 in honour of the founding of the modern Olympic Games as a way to raise awareness of the Olympic Movement and values. In celebration of Olympic Day, the Canadian Olympic School Program has developed special resources to bring the Olympic Movement to communities across Canada.
