The Steveston-London Sharks made sure there would be no buzzer-beating heartbreak this time.
The senior boys basketball team rolled to a first place finish on the boys side of the fourth annual Bob Carkner Memorial Tournament.
After a heartbreaking last second loss to the Hugh Boyd Trojans in the championship game a year ago, the Sharks were in control for much of the way in a 72-58 victory over the NorKam Saints on Saturday night.
The result marked the third consecutive victory by double digits for the hosts.
Steveston-London opened with a 94-60 win over the Kistilano Blue Demons "B" team and also cruised past another Kamloops school in the semi-finals - the Valleyview Vikings - 8570.
Malcolm Lee was named the tournament's most valuable player, while teammates Kingston Chung and Carlos Prada earned all-star honours.
A rebuilding year meant a tough road for the defending champion Trojans. They opened with a 67-56 loss to Prince of wales, then fell 5942 to Burnaby Central. They salvaged a seventh place finish with a 66-56 win over Kitsilano.
The Sharks will be participating in the inaugural Bill Kushnir Memorial Tournament at Delta secondary this week. They open play Thursday against St. Pats Celtics of Vancouver - ranked fifth among provincial "A" teams. A win would likely set-up a semi-final tilt Friday against No. 5 "AAA" Tamanawis Wildcats.
At the buzzer... Chung poured in 37 points and added nine assists in a 100-77 loss to Palmer in Richmond League action last week. Prada added 21, while the Griffins were led by the 46-point and 17-rebound performance of Jamie Madewan.
Palmer went on to capture last weekend's Delview Classic Tournament in North Delta, defeating city rival McRoberts 69-51 in the championship game.
Jhuty led the winners with 22 points. The Griffins advanced to the final with wins over Delview (98-63) and B.C. Christian (91-67).
Madewan had 27 and 28 points respectively and was named the tournament's MVP. Karn Mann was selected to the all-star teams.
McRoberts' Arnold Macalipay and John Tseng also took home all-star awards. The Strikers reached the final by getting past Panorama Ridge (74-55) and Langley Christian (73-44).
McMath (6-0) has all but locked up first place in the Richmond League after a 76-73 overtime win over Palmer Monday in a battle of unbeaten teams. Andrew McCaskill had 41 points for the Wildcats. Madewan added 31 to lead Palmer.
The Wildcats are also at the Kushnir tourney in Ladner this week. They will play No. 1 "AAA" ranked Yale on Thursday.
