Tyler Sandhu will be continuing the next chapter of his hockey career close to home.
The Richmond native has committed to the UBC Thunderbirds following five seasons in the Western Hockey League.
Sandhu served as captain of the Tri-City Americans this past season and put up career numbers with 83 points in 72 games, including 23 goals, to finish 21st in league scoring.
“I'm excited. I've always heard a lot of good things about UBC both academically and hockey-wise," says 21-year-old. “Having your family and friends there to support you is always awesome.”
Sandhu came through Richmond Minor and Seafair’s rep programs and was selected 42nd overall by the Portland Winterhawks in the 2011 WHL Bantam Draft. He then enjoyed a productive campaign in the B.C. Major Midget Hockey League with the Greater Vancouver Canadians before embarking on his major junior career at 16.
He is an important piece of UBC’s 2017 recruiting class.
“Tyler Sandhu is a high-end offensive player, who has all the tools to be one of U SPORTS top scorers for years to come," says UBC head coach Sven Butenschon. "A player with this kind of offensive output doesn't come around very often.”
