Fresh of his big win at the 2019 Canadian Skating Championships, Wesley Chiu is representing Canada in Germany this week.

Newly crowned Canadian Novice Men’s champion Wesley Chiu is in Oberstdorf, Germany this week for the 2019 Bavarian Open.

The 13-year-old from Richmond and Connaught Skating Club member was among 15 athletes assigned to the competition by Skate Canada.

Chiu will be skating in the Advanced Novice Men’s event. The short program is scheduled for Tuesday and the free skate will take place on Wednesday.

This is the Grade 8 Richmond Christian student’s first time competing in Europe and second time representing Canada internationally. He skated at an event in Milwaukee last summer.

Chiu was crowned national men’s novice champion last month in St. Jean New Brunswick thanks to career best skates that resulted in a 28 point margin over his nearest rival.

He is expected to also be named to Team B.C. for the upcoming Canada Winter Games in Red Deer.
