A near hole-one-one for Elsie Liu propelled the Richmond golfer to a first place finish in the 11-an-12-year-old girls division at the Maple Leaf Junior Golf’s Mini-Tour stop at Tsawwassen Springs last Sunday.
Liu recorded a 77, finishing three strokes better than Port Coquitlam’s Ye Ji Kwon.
“Hole 13 was my best hole, I almost made a hole-in-one, I hit my tee shot to a foot,” said the 11-year-old who added she enjoyed the Boston Pizza sponsored tour for the “great courses and free pizza.”
The tournament featured 72 players, ranging from five to 12 years of age, making it a record setting field. Besides battles for trophies and prizes, the event shortlisted several players for the US Kids Golf World Championship at renowned Pinehurst Resort in North Carolina, August 2-4, 2018, the pinnacle event for competitive golfers ages 12 and under. The confirmed exemptions will be announced once qualifying has finished across the country.
Other Richmond results included Annie Liu finishes third in the girls nine-and-10-year-old division.
The next Mini Tour stop in B.C. is the MJT Mini Tour/Future Champions Golf Callaway World Championship Qualifier at Eaglequest Surrey - Coyote Creek. The FCG Callaway World Championship will be played in Palm Springs, CA, July 16-18, 2018. MJT Mini-Tour Order of Merit points will also be up for grabs, and these rankings will determine the field for the 2018 MJT Mini Tour National Championship presented by Ford Canada back at Tsawwassen Springs in late August.
