Richmond pickleball players made a spectacular debut at the first-ever BC Provincial Pickleball Championships this past weekend.

More than 600 athletes across the province gathered at Vernon from May 11 to 14 to go head-to-head in the largest pickleball provincial championship in Canada.

Representing Richmond were 46 members of the Richmond BC Pickleball Association (RBCPA), who won 26 medals complete with a podium sweep in the 4.5 (a rating representing high skill level) men's doubles division open to all ages.

RBCPA member Nathan Choi and his partner led the podium sweep, followed by silver medalists Richard Xiang and Tyler Yan and bronze medalists Ming Wang and his partner.

The rest of the medals were spread across women's doubles, mixed doubles, men's singles and men's doubles, adding up to a total of 15 gold medals, eight silvers and three bronzes.

Meanwhile, the RBCPA will be holding a charity and fundraising tournament at the Hugh Boyd pickleball courts on May 21 and 28, as well as June 18.
