McMath cracks top 10 at cross-country championships

Junior girls lead Richmond contingent with ninth place finish

A top 10 finish in the junior girls team standings for the McMath Wildcats highlighted a strong contingent of Richmond athletes competing at last weekend’s B.C. Secondary Schools Cross-Country Championships at Jericho Beach.

The Wildcats placed ninth among the 29 entries — led by Selin Tasdemir coming 16th overall in a field of 249 runners. She covered the 4.6 km course in 19:56.

Her teammates’ results included: Ashley Maedel (20th, 20:03), Elizabeth Kennedy (72nd, 21:41), Olivia Northrup (21:51) and Sophie James (22:21).

McRoberts’ Kezia Kawamura was 76th (20:29) and Hugh Boyd’s Janelle Tuazon-Cabido was 146th (21:44).

In the junior boys race, Steveston-London’s Evan De Souza was 22nd among 271 entries. He completed the 5 km course in 18:24. Richmond High’s An You was 151st (20:30) while a trio of MacNeill runners competed — Everett Ho (20:48), Josh Cahal (21:01) and Miguel Salvador (21:44).

In the senior boys division, Richmond Christian’s Josh Woolgar was 31st thanks to a clocking of 24:59 over the 6.9 km course. McRoberts Ryan Heroux also turned in an impressive showing — finishing 51st (25:51) among 233 entries.

McMath’s Hope Chan led the local contingent in the 4.6 km senior girls race, placing 129th with a time of 21:34. She was followed by Richmond Christian’s Charity Field in 137th place (21:42). The Wildcat contingent also included Morgan Flynn (159th, 22:11), Dakota Chan (176th, 22:37), Erica Siefert-Anderson (182, 22:44) and Danielle Cosco (207, 23:28). The race featured 242 participants.
