McMath Wildcats reached the quarter-finals at the 51st annual B.C. AAA Field Hockey Championships, eventually settling for eighth place on the weekend in Duncan.
The Wildcats opened the 16-team event by battling perennial Fraser Valley powerhouse South Delta to a 2-2 draw. The result would set the stage for McMath to have an opportunity to secure one of the two championship round playoff spots up for grabs in its pool.
The girls turned in another solid effort in a 2-0 loss to eventual champion Cowichan. Knowing goals for would serve as the tiebreaker, the Wildcats filled the net in their 10-1 thrashing of Chilliwack. It was enough to send them onto the final eight on Friday afternoon against Handsworth.
The dominant North Shore school ended any medal hopes with a 3-0 victory. McMath then dropped a 3-2 decision to Fraser Valley champion Glen Eagle of Coquitlam, before being edged 1-0 by West Van in the seventh place game on Saturday afternoon.
