Lim helps UBC Thunderbirds come flying out out of the gate

Richmond's Taryn Lim scored twice to lead the UBC Thunderbirds women's soccer team to convincing 5-1 season opening victory over the Calgary Dinos last weekend at Thunderbird Stadium.

Richmond's Taryn Lim scored twice to lead the UBC Thunderbirds women's soccer team to convincing 5-1 season opening victory over the Calgary Dinos last weekend at Thunderbird Stadium.

UBC was already enjoying a 1-0 lead when a pair of Richmond players went to work in the 13th minute. Lim netted her first tally of the night\ when she neatly one-timed home a cross from Rachel Ramsden.

Lim would later close out the scoring when she let fly with a speculative effort from long range and managed to fit it perfectly into the top corner.

One night later, the fourth-year striker was at it again, scoring late in the opening half and added an assist in a 4-0 win over the Lethbridge Pronghorns.

"She's such a lovable kid. She goes out there all heart, fights for everything and competes hard," UBC head coach Mark Rogers said of Lim. "She creates so much joy for Janine (Frazao) doing a lot of the hard work to create those scoring chances, so for her to have the limelight a bit today was nice."

Ramsden finished the weekend with a pair of assists.

Both Lim and Ramsden, a fifth-year starting midfielder, were standouts for the Langara Falcons before transferring to UBC.

The Thunderbirds' starting 11 features another Richmond player - second-year defender Sydney Morrison.

Next up for UBC is a road tilt against Trinity Western on Saturday in Langley.

Corner kicks... Richmond goalkeeper Luke O'Shea helped the UBC men's team also open the season on a strong note. He recorded a pair of shutouts as the Thunderbirds rolled to home field victories over Calgary (3-0) and Lethbridge (8-0).
