Up-and-coming Richmond junior golf standout Alisha Lau has been named to Golf Canada’s national women’s team development squad for the 2015 season.
At just 15, the Burnett secondary student is the youngest member of the five player team that also features Naomi Ko (Victoria), Jaclyn Lee (Calgary), Grace St-Germain (Ottawa) and Michelle Kim (Surrey).
The Development Squad compliments the women’s national team and is designed to help facilitate the continued progress of Canada’s top young talents. The girls will be coached by Ann Carroll.
Lau has enjoyed an outstanding 2014 season, highlighted by playing for Canada at the inaugural World Junior Girls Golf Championship back in late September at the Angus Glen Golf Club in Markham, ON.
The Quilchena Golf and Country Club junior got better as the tournament progressed — firing rounds of 83-80-75-74 to finish 42nd.
Earlier, she turned heads with a third place finish at the B.C. Women’s Amateur. She was also tied for fifth at the B.C. Junior Girls Championship and 20th at the Canadian Junior Girls Championship. She thrived in match play format as well, reaching the semi-finals of the 2014 PNGA Junior Girls Amateur.
Lau helped secure her national development team position by also placing in the top four at a pair of Golf Canada’s CN Future Links Championship events.
She also thrived on the junior golf circuit, finishing third at the Canadian Junior Golf Association’s World Junior Challenge and the Maple Leaf Junior Tour’s Boston Pizza National Championship.
The national women’s team includes returning players Brittany Marchand (Orangeville) and Jennifer Ha (Calgary), ranked 67th and 90th in the world respectively. Marchand is a senior at North Carolina State University while Ha in her junior year at Kent State. Rounding out the team are Maddie Szeryk and Elizabeth Tong.
