Host Islanders capture bronze medal at U12 provincials

Richmond 2000 Islanders thrilled the hometown crowd last weekend with a bronze medal finish at the Provincial U12A Girls Fastpitch Championships.

Richmond 2000 Islanders thrilled the hometown crowd last weekend with a bronze medal finish at the Provincial U12A Girls Fastpitch Championships.

The team, led by head coach Troy Latrace and assistants Bill Sherritt, Jody Latrace, Karen Wright and Amanda Sidhu, breezed through the round robin portion of the tournament with a 4-0 record.

The Islanders then won their first two playoff games, beating Abbotsford Outlaws and Surrey Storm in convincing fashion. The hosts dropped their first game of the weekend to a powerful Ridge Meadows team and gamely fought a back and forth hit fest against White Rock Renegades, being narrowly defeated, and ultimately taking the bronze.

The Islanders averaged 11 runs and10 hits per game, with a .416 batting average - the highest of any team in the competition.

The Richmond Girls Softball Association is extremely proud of the team's strong showing. The roster includes: Emily Latrace, Natalie Caras, Ellen Yam, Kristen Naidu, Abby Zawada, Annie Morrison, Emilie Sherritt, Capri Horstmann, Jessica Porter, Miranda Herle, Denae Turko and Kasey Wright.
