Falcons feature plenty of Richmond flavour

A line-up loaded with Richmond talent has the Langara Falcons men's basketball team off to a competitive start in the Pacific Western Athletic Association.

The Falcons enter the holiday break with a 4-3 record following a 96-64 victory over Kwantlen Polytechnic University. The team is led in scoring my Richmond's Gurjote Jhaj who ranks second in the conference at 23.80 points per contest. Jhaj, who began his high school career at Richmond High before transferring to St. George's, also ranks ninth in assists with 3.40 per contest.

Leading the league in assists is Lanagra's Brody Greig. The McMath graduate is averaging nearly six assists per game. Other Lulu Island products on coach Jake McCallum's squad include: Jeff Chu (McMath), Matt Madewan (Palmer), Vince Tolentino (Vancouver College) and Ranjodh Hare who had a leading role in Palmer winning its first-ever B.C. title last spring.

Another member of Palmer's championship team is enjoying a solid freshman season for the University of Northern B.C. in Prince George. Point guard Billy Cheng ranks 10th in the league in assists (3.20) in helping the Timberwolves to a 4-2 record.

On the women's side, the Falcons enter the break at 2-5 after sweeping their final games of 2011. The victories were led by former McNair standout Denise Busayong who earned player-of-the-week honours for her performance.
