Paul Eberhardt is back to double duty when the basketball season tips off next fall.
The colourful longtime bench boss of the defending Richmond champion RC Palmer Griffins will also serve as head coach of the Langara Falcons men's basketball team.
Holding down two coaching positions is nothing new for Eberhardt, who was in charge of the Capilano University Blues program from 1999-2009, while continuing his high school coaching commitment.
If anything, Langara should be a better fit given its location to Palmer and it's not too far where Eberhardt has lived his entire life.
"I am more than excited to take over the head men's coaching job at Langara," said Eberhardt. "The tradition of excellence in this program is second to none, and it is an honour to follow in the footsteps of the many great coaches who have come before me."
Eberhardt takes over for Jake McCallum who stepped down this past March after six years with the Falcons. He is now the school's Acting Director of Athletics and Intramurals."
"We are very fortunate to be able to add Paul to our coaching staff," said McCallum. "He is an extremely passionate coach who brings with him a wealth of experience that will serve our student-athletes well."
As an NCCP Level III certified coach, Eberhardt has spent countless hours coaching with the Basketball B.C. Elite programs over the past 20-plus years.
He has a Master's Degree in Education and is also serving as the Athletic Director at Palmer. He was recognized as Basketball B.C. High School Coach of the Year in 2011 when he guided Palmer to the provincial "AAA" championship.
Both Langara basketball programs are now run by coaches with Richmond connections. The women's team is led by Mike Evans, who previously coached at London.
Meanwhile, Richmond's most decorated basketball coach is on the move again, this time leaving one Vancouver rival for another.
Bill Disbrow will be at St. George's for the 2012-13 season after an impressive run at Vancouver College. The former Richmond High coach, who led the Colts to five B.C. titles during an amazing 34 year coaching span, worked along side Lloyd Scrubb and Jon Tagulao during his time with the Fighting Irish. When he learned of the Saints opportunity, he jumped at the chance.
"I kind of put the word out that I'd like to coach a team on my own at VC, which was my first choice," Disbrow told the Vancouver Province "But nothing was really available. They already had excellent coaches at all levels, and they really wanted me back."
"Last year was the first one in which I didn't design the practices, and I realized that that was what I loved to do. I still had full input on everything, and nothing I ever said was ever rejected. I just discovered that it was the single thing I missed the most."
