A terrific shooting night for Jessica Jones wasn’t enough for the Simon Fraser University women’s basketball team in a 79-69 road loss to Concordia University on Saturday night in Portland.
The former McMath star made seven of 11 shots and scored a career-high 19 points. She was also 3-for-6 from three-point range.
The Cavaliers outscored SFU 16-8 in the first eight minutes of the last quarter to take their largest lead of the game, 79-63. Simon Fraser scored the final six points of the game, but it was too late.
Jones helped the Wildcats reach the provincial championship game in her Grade 12 year. The redshirt freshman guard is now in the starting lineup, averaging 10.4 points per game. She leads the team in three-point shooting, connecting on 30 of 89 attempts.
The Clan’s roster also includes former McRoberts standout Tia Tsang. The Richmond pair were part of SFU’s 2016 recruiting class. Tsang is averaging 7.6 points and 25 playing minutes per contest.
The loss dropped the Clan to 7-7 overall and 2-4 in the conference. The Clan plays a pair of home games this upcoming week on Jan. 11 against Saint Martin’s and Jan. 13 vs. Seattle Pacific. Both home games are 7p.m. tip-offs.
Meanwhile, there is plenty of local flavour at the University of Calgary.
The Dinos’ roster includes fourth-year guard Anmol Mattu and second-year forward Bobbi-Jo Colburn.
Mattu, who led Steveston-London to its first-ever provincial berth, is averaging 6.8 points per game. She ranks second in assists.
Colburn, who was Jones’ teammate at McMath, is coming off the bench to average nearly 10 points per contest.
A third member from the Wildcats team — forward Jessica Zawada — is in her second-year at University of Fraser Valley.
