Led by their best rushing performance of the season, the Hugh Boyd Trojans have locked up third place in B.C. High School Football’s Western AA Conference.

Austin Berry and Reace Mok combined for 340-yards on the ground as the Trojans evened its regular season record at 2-2 with a 26-9 victory over the Argyle Pipers.  They will close out their schedule today against the winless Holy Cross Crusaders in Burnaby and likely will be hosting an opening round provincial playoff game next week against the sixth place team from the Eastern Conference.

Berry finished with 182-yards along the ground and scored on touchdown runs of 15, 18 and 24 yards. Mok added another 158. Their big outings is a reflection of an offensive line that has made significant strides in the past two months.

It was also a productive outing for the Trojans defence that turned the Pipers back with three interceptions. None was bigger than Tomo Takeuchi’s takeaway with his team clinging to a 13-9 lead at the time. The senior linebacker added 12 tackles.

Middle linebacker Ryan Jensen continued his all-star season with 12 tackles and an interception. Shakur Lopez picked off the other Argyle pass to close out the game.

The Trojans coaching staff was also pleased with its team’s discipline after some costly penalties a week earlier in a loss to John Brasby. That resulted in a heart-to-heart speech at practice last week from assistant coach Serge Kaminsky — the former CIS All-Canadian and UBC standout.

“The kids have a lot of respect for Serge and he is usually pretty low key so that got their attention in a hurry,” said Trojans head coach Bill Haddow.
