Richmond's Minoru Park will be filled with young athletes for the annual track and field championships this weekend.
For the 55th year, the Kajaks Track and Field Club, in partnership with the City of Richmond, is hosting the B.C. Elementary Track and Field Championships at Richmond's Minoru Park from May 23 to 25.
This event was first created in 1968 by Richmond teachers Carl Savage and Kim Young to allow elementary athletes to compete in track and field events. At the time, only Legion-sponsored meets were available for high school and older athletes.
Last year, more than 1,300 students from as far as Victoria competed in the championships.
This is one of the biggest track and field meets in the province and is open to all students in grades three to seven from public and private schools.
No pre-qualifiers are needed and athletes can join as part of a school team or as an individual.
Families can register their own kids in whichever event they want to compete in.
