Vancouver International Airport has been named North America’s best airport for a record 12 years in a row by Skytrax World Airport Awards.

According to YVR, it’s the only airport in the world to receive this designation for 12 consecutive years.

The World Airport Awards, first launched in 1999, are recognized as the global benchmark of airport excellence, with more than 21.65 million completed passenger questionnaires.

The survey assesses, for example, check-in, security, comfort, signage, guest service, transportation, passenger amenities and friendliness at more than 500 airports worldwide.

YVR was also the only airport in Canada to receive Skytrax’s COVID-19 excellence award, a new category that looked at, for example, airports’ heath, hygiene and safety protocols during the pandemic.

"It’s an honour for YVR to be recognized as the best airport in North America for 12 years in a row. To also be recognized in the new award category of COVID-19 Airport Excellence, as one of the cleanest, safest and healthiest airports in the world, is a true testament to the expertise, hard work and dedication of our entire airport community,” said Tamara Vrooman, YVR’s president and CEO, in a statement.

YVR also placed 24th on Skytrax’s list of the 100 best airports in the world. Toronto Pearson placed 38th and Montreal, 63rd.

Hamad International Airport, in Doha, Qatar, took the top spot this year, followed by Toyko Haneda International Airport in second and Singapore Changi Airport in third.
