WestJet Encore, Porter and Qantas have been named by YVR in its annual quietest airline competition.
The 2024 Fly Quiet Awards winner were selected based on achieving the lowest annual noise levels and adherence to YVR noise abatement protocols.
The awards were created 19 years ago to raise awareness about and minimize noise pollution within the aviation industry.
Noise levels in the airport are measured using the Aircraft Noise & Operations Monitoring System.
WestJet Encore was awarded the prize in the propeller aircraft category. Porter Airlines took home the award in the narrow-body jet category, and Qantas Airways won for wide-body jets.
Serving as the country’s second busiest airport, YVR has put in place a noise management plan to reduce airport noise and deliver 24-hour air travel, according to the release.
“As we look to continued growth in the future, we recognize that our operations can have an impact on the communities around us, and we remain committed to minimizing this impact as much as possible,” read the plan.
YVR uses monitoring locations in several neighbourhoods to track the noise levels of planes in real time. To access the tracker, visit the WebTrak website.
In June 2024, there were a total of 2.3 million arriving and departing passengers in YVR, as well as 22,717 takeoffs and landings. In 2023, 24.9 million passengers moved through YVR, an increase of 15 million passengers annually since 1992.
