A youth-led organization is collecting clothing donations in Richmond and delivering them to local shelters across Metro Vancouver next weekend.
Uplift Canada Foundation, a Vancouver-based non-profit, is looking to up-cycle donated clothing, reduce environmental waste and help equip B.C. residents who are not “properly equipped” to deal with the remaining winter months.
Richmond residents who are cleaning out their closets are encouraged to donate unused clothes.
Uplift Canada consulted with B.C.-based shelters and has decided to collect only items that the shelters’ residents are requesting for that month.
For February, the organization is asking for donations of warm winter clothes, men’s sweatpants, pants and T-shirts.
Clothes can be collected in a bag and placed at the doorsteps for volunteers to pick up on February 26,
“By up-cycling clothing donations and ultimately supporting the circular economy, Uplift Canada is alleviating the environmental damage being caused by clothing waste in landfills, and instead repurposing these items into a usable resource to those in need,” says Uplift Canada in a media statement.
“As we primarily support individuals who are systemically overrepresented in shelter housing situations, we believe in an intersectional, decolonizing approach to giving and receiving.”
