Paving takes place on No. 5 Road from Seacliff to Knightsbridge until Friday, May 9, 2025.

Traffic on No. 5 Road between Seacliff Road and Kingsbridge Drive will be down to one lane in both directions this week as the road is being repaved.

This stretch is between Blundell Road and Steveston Highway.

According to the City of Richmond, paving work should be completed by Friday, May 9 at 8 p.m.

While one lane should be open in both directions, for public and construction crew safety, there might be “occasional, brief disruptions” as equipment is moved and repositioned, the city said.

The cost of the project is $750,000.

The city is using fibre-reinforced asphalt in the No. 5 Road paving project.

“This material differs from conventional asphalt by incorporating synthetic fibres, which significantly enhance pavement durability and extend the road’s life cycle, particularly under heavy traffic loads,” city spokesperson Gerina Heathe told the Richmond News.

Highway 99 traffic disrupted for three nights

In the meantime, a crane repositiong on the Steveston Interchange project has been extended from one night to three nights.

Highway 99 northbound and southbound will be closed to traffic overnight between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. from Tuesday to Thursday, May 6, 7 and 8.

It was originally supposed to be closed just on Tuesday night.

The closure is needed to ensure crews can safely move a large crane across Highway 99.

Furthermore, crews will be working on electrical connections for the George Massey Tunnel counterflow system.

Vehicles will be detoured onto the on- and off-ramps along Steveston Highway.
