A 21-year-old man has died in hospital after being hit by a bus on Westminster Highway, in the Hamilton neighbourhood.

Police in Richmond are now looking for passengers of the bus who may have witnessed the accident, which occurred Saturday at 6:40 a.m.

“The driver of the bus has been cooperative with our investigation. We are still trying to interview some of the passengers on the bus, many of whom, left abruptly before our investigators arrived,” says Cpl. Dennis Hwang, via a news release.

Hwang described the vehicle as a “2003 Ford bus.”

The News understands the bus was privately operated for business purposes.

He said the bus was travelling westbound in the 21000-block of the road when it hit two pedestrians — the victim and a 22-year-old female.

Both were taken to hospital but the man died on Sunday.

“The Richmond RCMP Road Safety Unit (RSU) is investigating this fatal collision and has enlisted the assistance of the Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service (ICARS) as well as inspectors from the BC Commercial Vehicle Safety and Enforcement branch. Much of the area was closed off during the initial investigation.

“Alcohol is not believed to be a factor in this collision,” said Hwang.

“Our Victim Services Unit has been instrumental in matters pertaining to the family of the deceased and as a vital support network for the surviving pedestrian.”
