Freedom to Read Week at the Richmond Public Libraries

This annual event is celebrated by libraries across Canada. Each year, the Richmond Public Library highlights the importance of freedom of information and the rights of individuals to choose what they want to read, view and listen to. The library also raises awareness on the issues surrounding censorship and its effects. Throughout the week, libraries will celebrate with displays of banned and challenged books at its branches. For information about the national celebrations, visit www.freedomtoread.ca.

Friday, March 2 to Sunday, March 4: 7 p.m. and 2 p.m.

Richmond Youth Dance Company performs Choices at the Richmond Cultural Centre

This personal and unique show at the Richmond Cultural Centre is based on decisions the dancers have faced in their own lives and the effects their choices have had on themselves and the world around them. For this showcase, the company has worked with additional instructors to learn an eclectic mix of dance styles with guest musicians providing live musical accompaniment for selected pieces and tap performer, Fernando Martin-Del-Campo, joining the company on stage. Tickets are $7 and can be purchased in-person at the Richmond Cultural Centre or by phone at 604-247-8300.

Saturday, March 3: 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Game of Apps Showcase at Richmond Public Library

Following a 16-week extracurricular program that offered students from various Richmond secondary schools the opportunity to work in teams to develop iPad or iPhone apps, the general public is invited to come and see the final results of each team’s projects, including their final pitch presentations, app demos, early prototypes, user testing results, source code and much more! The showcase is free to attend and takes place at the Brighouse branch. For more information, visit www.yourlibrary.ca/events.

March 3-4 and March 10-11: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
