The public is being asked to stay on the lookout after a spike in mail thefts.

Richmond RCMP is asking for assistance in combating mail theft by asking the community to be aware of suspicious behaviour around communal mailboxes.

The latest batch of crime statistics indicated an increase in the number of incidents of mail theft since last months reporting period.

From May 27 to June 23, there were 11 incidents of mailbox damage and/or mail theft reported.

In each of the two preceding crime reduction periods there were only two reports received. In most instances the mailboxes have been pried open, but in two files there was no observable damage to the mailboxes.

The mailboxes being targeted are outdoor townhouse mailboxes and neighbourhood communal mailboxes, said Richmond RCMPs Cpl. Sherrdean Turley.

There is no specific time these incidents are occurring as they range from early in the morning to late in the evening, Turley said in a press release.

The community is encouraged to be vigilant for suspicious behaviour around communal mailboxes and is asked to report these incidents immediately to police.

Waiting to report these incidents prevents officers from speaking to the suspicious persons involved and hinders the investigation, she added.

To report suspicious behaviour, call Richmond RCMP at 604-278-1212. To remain anonymous, call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
