Many Canadian citizens have stepped up to help those in need during the COVID-19 pandemic and this week celebrates the country’s volunteers for that.

The Richmond RCMP took to Twitter to thank their volunteers for National Volunteer Week on Sunday morning.

“For all those Canadians who give the gift of their time we applaud you,” read the post.

They added that throughout the week, the Richmond RCMP will be featuring “the many faces of (their) volunteers” who have helped keep the city safe.

Meanwhile, Canada’s Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, started National Volunteer Week by thanking all the Canadian volunteers who have taken their time to help others during the pandemic.

“This year’s theme, ‘It’s time to applaud this country’s volunteers,’ underscores how volunteers work tirelessly and often behind the scenes,” said Trudeau in a statement.

He added that many charities and non-profit organizations depend on the support of these volunteers to be able to help others in need and even in these “difficult times, Canadians are still taking care of each other.”

Trudeau highlighted several volunteer groups such as crisis responders for the Kids Help Phone, writing letters to isolated seniors and those packing hampers for families in need at the food bank.

Canadians are encouraged to “stick together” during the tough times and to sign up for the National COVID-19 Volunteer Recruitment Campaign and other organizations to help fight the pandemic.

“To our volunteers, know that your fellow Canadians see you and appreciate your dedication to your communities and our country. We know how much you do, and we are grateful,” said Trudeau.
