Visa bills rise for back-to-school

We're headed into another school year and with that comes another back-to-school shopping excursion for Canadian families.

We're headed into another school year and with that comes another back-to-school shopping excursion for Canadian families.

Commissioned by Visa, this year's back-to-school survey reveals the average Canadian consumer will spend $677 in both in-store and online purchases between now and Labour Day.

Another finding reveals Canadian shoppers plan to increase their online spending by $8 to $248 on back-to school items, compared to last year.

Canadians are increasingly interested in saving money when it comes to online shopping, citing lower prices and better sales as reasons why they are drawn to adding back-to-school purchases to virtual shopping carts.

Here are some facts related to British Columbia:

- In-store spending on back-to-school items: $442

- Portion of in-store purchases to be made at Canadian retailers: 80 per cent (most likely to shop in the U.S. comparing to other regions.)

- Online spending on back-to-school items: $198

- People are scaling down, shifting to lower value items, as this year fewer expect to spend in higher brackets ($200 -$500 down six points), ($500 and up, down eight points).
