Video/photos: Massive house fire in Richmond neighbourhood

Four fire trucks and an ambulance raced to the scene of the blaze. Seven people now homeless

A house fire has black smoke filling the skies of east Richmond's Hamilton neighbourhood on Sunday afternoon.

Four Richmond Fire-Rescue trucks, one ambulance and one Richmond RCMP vehicle attended a call to a residence at Garratt Drive and Wilson Avenue, near McLean Park shortly after 12 p.m.

In a video submitted to the Richmond News, Richmond Fire-Rescue crew can be seen putting out a fire that has lit up the entire back part of the home.

Twenty-one firefighters responded to the call and tackled the fire promptly, according to Deputy Chief Al McGrath with the Richmond Fire-Rescue.

"The fire was contained to the rear of the single-family residence with an extension to the attic," said McGrath.

"Crew struck the fire quickly and are putting out hot spots in the attic area."

McGrath added that there were no injuries reported and that the residents of the home are safe.

Hamilton resident Angie Liu told the Richmond News this was a "shock" to those living in the neighbourhood.

"It's a massive fire and this is a shock to us because it's a rare occurrence in our neighbourhood," said Liu, adding firefighters responded "very quickly" to the incident.

"Thank you to our firefighters. Thank you, thank you, thank you!"

The cause of the fire has yet to be determined.
