South Richmond will have a new daycare opening at the end of the month.

There are 10 children on a waitlist for a new daycare centre in Richmond even though it hasn't officially opened.

Tzu Chi Foundation Canada is launching a small daycare called Tzu Chi Great Love Daycare at 9871 Finn Rd., near No. 4 Road and next to its charity farm, with an expected opening date of July 22.

The charity has been planning to open a daycare for almost 30 years.

The daycare can currently take up to eight children, according to Tom Tong, director of administration and public relations at Tzu Chi.

Childcare fees are $1,450 per month for kids aged two and a half to three, and $1,360 for those aged three to five.

Tong told the Richmond News that Tzu Chi has been trying to open a daycare since 1997, when they launched the Tzu Chi Academy language school.

He said the Canada Revenue Agency has approved a change to the foundation's mandate to include daycare operations as part of its official activities.

"However, due to be lack of operational experience, it has been very difficult for us to submit a bid to be an operator in a daycare owned by the public school or to lease a space provided by the city," said Tong.

"Tzu Chi Great Love Daycare is a starting point for us to accumulate the experiences for future expansion in Richmond, Vancouver and other cities."
