Steveston resident Mike Karamanian opened his door Monday to find a beaver there.

A Steveston family got a surprise visitor at their front door Monday night.

When the family dog started barking, indicating someone was approaching the house, Mike Karamanian opened his front door and heard the pitter patter of footsteps.

Peering into the twilight, he made out the shape of a beaver in front of their house.

The sound he thought was footsteps was its tail flapping on the ground.

Karamanian said he’s never seen beavers this close to his home, although other Richmondites report spotting them near Britannia Shipyards and in Terra Nova.

The next day, Karamanian’s dog was still detecting the scent of the beaver, sniffing around in front of their house looking for it.

Beavers are known to live in the Fraser River, but Karamian’s house is several blocks from the river.

According to the City of Richmond’s website, adults can be seen farther from their river homes looking for food for winter.
