Richmond Fire-Rescue was dispatched to a structure fire that broke out at a "multi-unit commercial structure" near Costco on Saturday evening.

One member of the public was injured in a fire on 2900 Smith Street by Bridgeport Road near Costco, which happened at around 5 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 6.

Richmond Fire-Rescue responded to a "structure fire" at the strip mall and found "heavy smoke" coming from the back of the mall, according to Al McGrath, deputy chief of Richmond Fire-Rescue.

The fire has since been extinguished and crews are opening up concealed spaces to check whether the fire has extended elsewhere, McGrath told The Richmond News.

The injured person was sent to the hospital by BC Ambulance Service and a fire investigator has been dispatched to the scene to determine the origin and cause of the fire.
