The car that crashed into a Canada Line support pillar in Richmond on Sunday rear-ended another vehicle seconds before the collision.
According to Richmond RCMP, the BMW sedan in question hit the back of a Mercedes SUV that was travelling northbound on Sunday on No. 3 Road, close to Ackroyd Road.
However, as the Mercedes planned to turn eastbound onto Ackroyd, it was struck from behind by the BMW, which then veered off the road and into the giant, concrete guideway.
The driver of the BMW was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries and police say that neither alcohol nor speed are considered as factors in the accident, which happened about 11:30 a.m.
The service on the line between Bridgeport and Brighouse stations was halted for 40 minutes to allow engineers to assess the structural integrity of the pillar.
According to TransLink, “damage to the pillar was found to be minimal and hadn’t affected the structural integrity of the guideway.
“Service was restored about 40 minutes later, once we determined it was safe. A bus bridge was activated during the service disruption to shuttle passengers between Bridgeport and Brighouse.”
