The condition of a 12-year-old girl struck by a car on Wednesday afternoon has been upgraded to serious but stable, police say.

She was hit by an eastbound car driven by a 79-year-old around 4 p.m. as she tried to pick a path, away from a crosswalk, over Francis Road near to No. 3 Road.

The girl was originally taken to Childrens Hospital in critical condition.

However, a statement released by Richmond Mounties Thursday afternoon stated that the victim was in an induced coma as a result of head trauma and that her condition had improved.

The driver involved, a 79 year old Richmond resident, remained at the scene of the collision and has been cooperative with police, said Cpl. Sherrdean Turley.

At this point, its not known whether or not charges will be laid. Drugs or alcohol were not factors in this collision, nor was the weather or condition of the roadway.

Eight witnesses have given statements to police and investigators are currently reviewing the statements obtained in an attempt to understand exactly what occurred how to proceed, added Turley.

A local nurse, who had turned the corner into Francis Road in her car seconds after the accident, was the first to offer help to the stricken girl.

I spotted all the commotion and I rushed over to see if I could help, said the woman, who asked not to be named.

Two people were already there, but they didnt know first aid, so I administered it.

She was unconscious and there was some bleeding from the head I think. I made sure here airways were clear so she could breath.

The nurse secured the girls head shortly before emergency services arrived.

She added that eyewitnesses to the accident said the girl ran between two cars.

This man, who watched it happen, said the driver of the car involved never stood a chance and knew the girl was going to get hit, added the nurse.

Police are appealing for anyone who witnessed the accident to call them immediately on 604-278-1212.
