Challenging the stigma around mental health, Babe Nation Creations and WhoHaha have partnered to create a comedy series about depression and anxiety.

The 11-episode series, Ghost BFF, follows two best friends, one alive, one dead, across space, time and the suburbs as they struggle to find themselves and right past wrongs following a suicide.

“Ghost BFF is an edgy, poignant series that uses comedy as a coping mechanism and provides an authentic experience for the viewer, proving that some of life’s funniest moments arise in the darkest of times,” said Audrey Povar, development producer at WhoHaha, a comedy platform for female comedians established by Elizabeth Banks, in a press release. “The show is the perfect example of furthering WhoHaha’s mission to elevate funny female-created content staying ahead of the zeitgeist.”

The series stars Vanessa Matsui and Tiio Horn and follows the journey of Tara and Amy, two friends who were once inseparable. Tara was a reckless musician; Amy, a promising painter. Their friendship was pure, unadulterated fun. But, everything changed when Tara, following a period of depression, killed herself, leaving behind a shattered and heartbroken Amy.

Now in present day, Tara has been dead for three years and Amy feels she has moved on; she's quit painting and is engaged to a nice but conservative guy. Suddenly, Tara appears out of nowhere and a bizarre yet humorous reunion follows.

The series is also accompanied by 12 two-minute videos titled Let’s Talk About Our Feels, which addresses topics brought forward in the series through the study of mindfulness. To celebrate the series’ premiere, a screening of the first six episodes will take place at the TIFF Bell Lightbox on Feb. 28, in Toronto.
