UFC star to open MMA-inspired gym in Richmond

Michelle Waterson coming to town Saturday to launch B.C.'s third UFC location

If you’re a fan of UFC and like going to the gym, then you really need to mark this weekend down in your calendar.

The third B.C. location of the new UFC GYM franchise is being launched Saturday in Richmond by one of the female stars of the fast-growing sport.

UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship)’s #7 ranked straw-weight Michelle Waterson will host a live Q&A, a cardio kickboxing class and meet and greet at the new facility on Westminster Highway, close to No. 2 Road.

Waterson, an American-born mom, is an MMA (mixed martial arts) champion, who has been a professional fighter since 2007, securing awards for the Invicta FC Atomweight Championship, Women’s MMA Atomweight of the Year and Fight of the Year Awards.

Increased popularity of fitness class based exercise in North America has, according to UFC GYM, caused a surge in demand for mixed-martial arts training.

The Richmond facility will boast a full range of group fitness classes, one-on-one coaching, personal and group dynamic training and MMA-style youth programming.

“Michelle’s dedication to her daughter, family and career are incredibly impressive.

“UFC GYM offers the ultimate fitness experience with state-of-the-art equipment, top-notch coaching, and an unparalleled community of athletes and we are thrilled to expand our community into Richmond.”

UFC GYM is the first major brand extension of UFC.

Saturday’s launch will include a customized class schedule, featuring fitness classes on: Kickboxing, daily ultimate training, Brazilian jiu-jitsu, youth MMA and a striking seminar.
