Two Richmond schools are among 50 to be receiving provincial funding for new playgrounds this year.

Grauer and Kidd elementary schools will both be given $90,000 to build standard playgrounds, the province announced last Friday.

"As a parent, I understand first-hand how tough it can be for schools and parents to find the time and volunteers to fundraise for playground equipment and activities," said Rob Fleming, minister of education.

"Our government is committed to improving the learning environment at B.C. schools - safe, fun and accessible playgrounds are very much part of delivering on this commitment. And to make this happen, parents should not have to become dedicated fundraisers in their spare time."

The province says it is giving a total of $5 million to build 50 playgrounds at schools in 34 districts this year, including 30 accessible playgrounds.

All playgrounds are expected to be built over the next six months so that they’re ready for the start of the new school year in September.
