Tunnel talk

With all this tunnel talk, the Richmond Chamber of Commerce decided to take matters into its own hands and host an open online survey.

With all this tunnel talk, the Richmond Chamber of Commerce decided to take matters into its own hands and host an open online survey.

The survey asked respondents to vote on one or all five options that were presented for the George Massey Tunnel Replacement project.

"We wanted to get a man-on-the-street perspective," said chair Barry Grabowski. "This gave us a way to get a sense of what the community was thinking. Sometimes these government projects don't always reach everyone in the communities."

Out of 245 respondents, 126 were in favour of replacing the existing tunnel with a new bridge, making up 51 per cent, while 119 opposed.

The second most popular option was to maintain the existing tunnel and build a new crossing along the 99 corridor, with 81 in favour, making up 33 per cent.

The project recently completed Phase Two where the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure announced five options for the tunnel.

Public consultations were held in Richmond, Surrey and Delta in March to provide feedback on the choices. The final day for input was Tuesday.
