The BC Coroners Service has confirmed one fatality from an overnight crash at the George Massey Tunnel.

“I can confirm the BC Coroners Service was notified to investigate a death at that location (North of the George Massey Tunnel),” said a Coroners Service spokesperson in an email to the Optimist Wednesday morning. “We are early in our investigation to determine the cause, with no further details at this time. As you are likely already aware, as per the Coroners Act we do not confirm or release ID.”

The Optimist has reached out to Richmond RCMP for further comment.

Delta police were also at the scene assisting RCMP, according to spokesperson Cris Leykauf.

Global News reported that the crash was a head-on collision between an SUV and a sedan in the southbound lanes of the tunnel just after midnight. Both vehicles were destroyed in the incident.

The crash happened while maintenance crews were working in the northbound section of the tunnel.

The police investigation resulted in both lanes of the tunnel closed until 7 a.m. Wednesday morning when the crossing was reopened fully to traffic.
