TransLink is introducing a 'bike bus' to provide more room for cyclists travelling from Bridgeport Station to Tsawwassen Ferry Terminal this summer.
The Bike Bus is retrofitted and can hold nine bikes in total, with seven additional interior bike racks. It will follow the existing 620 route with separate loading and unloading bays at Bridgeport Station and Ladner Exchange.
The bus will be displayed as 900 Bike Bus to Bridgeport Station or Tsawwassen Ferry.
“The return of warm weather means more people are cycling to their favourite B.C. destinations,” said TransLink CEO Kevin Quinn.
“We’re excited to launch the Bike Bus, as it will better connect our customers with one of the most popular Metro Vancouver routes for summer travel and ensure they can easily explore our beautiful region.”
The project is funded for this summer as a part of TransLink's Customer Experience Action Plan.
"If the project is successful, it could become a permanent seasonal route to help link Metro Vancouver’s cycling community with BC Ferries, through a reliable and convenient transit option," read TransLink's press release.
City spokesman Clay Adams told the News that Richmond is interested to see how successful the project will be, since it supports initiatives that encourage sustainable transportation and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
"The Bike Bus is a great idea to help those commuters who encounter challenges getting their bike through the tunnel to Tsawwassen. We are aware that some riders can wait for several buses before finding room for their bike, so this should help alleviate that enormously," he said.
The Bike Bus will run from July 1 to September 5 on Fridays, weekends, and holidays. The service will be available from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. with hourly departures that align with ferry sailings to Swartz Bay.
