A digital map detailing crime hot spots in Richmond has been updated to be more accessible and current.
"We want to make it more accessible to the public so that they can make better-informed decisions and be better aware of their surroundings," said city spokesperson Ted Townsend.
The map provides data for three types of property crimes - residential break-and-enter, commercial break-and-enter, and theft of auto - dating back to January 2012.
A user selects a date range and one or all of the types of crimes, then the map slowly populates with colour-coded dots. Clicking on a dot will provide details of the crime such as how it was committed, at what time and prevention tips.
"All we want to do is provide people with the steps they can take to not be a victim," said Cpl. Sherrdean Turley.
Criminals don't usually target any specific neighbourhood in Richmond, according to both Turley and Townsend.
"Every neighbourhood can be safe and secure," said Townsend. "It's the homeowner's responsibility to be part of ensuring this, by locking up and being more aware."
