Last Saturday, Tourism Richmonds Steveston Visitor Centre celebrated its grand opening at its new location in the historic Steveston Museum.

The event included a ribbon cutting ceremony, horse and carriage rides, as well as a Richmond Perfect Pie contest. Twenty-one pies were entered for judging, while 48 were distributed to the public for tasting.

We are thrilled to have a more permanent presence in Steveston and are delighted to have taken over the management of the Post Office and other tourism generating programs in order to further fund the development of tourism in Richmond, said Tracy Lakeman CEO of Tourism Richmond. All of the profits from the Visitor Centre will be re-invested in the community in the form of tourism marketing and heritage programs as developed by the Steveston Historical Society.

The winners for the pie contest were:

Best Crust: Pina Colada Pie, from the River Rock Casino and Resort

Most Creative: Salted Caramel and Rhubarb Ice Cream Pie, from Sarahs Original Old Fashioned Ice Cream

Best Overall: Strawberry Chocolate Pie, from Batch Foods

Honourable Mentions: Apple Bacon Pie with White Cheddar Ice Cream, and Savoury Christmas Pie, both from the Delta Hotel

The judges were Lakeman, Mayor Malcolm Brodie, MP Kerry-Lynn Findlay, MLA Rob Howard, Fairchild radio and TV personality Deborah Moore and Richmond foodie blogger Lindsay Anderson.
