An SUV caught fire in the parking lot of a townhouse complex at Gilbert and Granville roads Monday evening, according to neighbours in the area.

It’s not clear what started the blaze, but witnesses said an SUV was seen to have burst into flames at about 10:20 p.m.

One witness said he could hear the sounds of explosion at the scene. He added that no one was at the home where the vehicle was parked at the time, but neighbours called 911 and Richmond Fire Rescue responded quickly to put out the fire.

If neighbours hadn’t acted, said the witness, the fire might have burned down houses.

Richmond News has reached out to the fire department for comment.
