Last year, with popcorn and blankets in tow, more than 700 people bundled up and snuggled into chairs to watch Despicable Me on a giant inflatable screen under the stars at King George Park. The popular grassroots summer series is back again.

The third annual Summer Fun Nights, hosted by the East Richmond Community Association (ERCA) and Cambie Community Centre, begins Tuesday, July 31.

For four Tuesdays, everyone is invited to take part in a free, fun evening filled with live musical performances, a fundraising barbecue/concession, face painting, bubble blowing, free yoga in the park and other games and activities.

Its such a great outdoor event and it gets everybody, young and old, single and families, seniors and youth together for real, feel-good community spirit events, said Tatiana Micenko, community development coordinator for the ERCA.

To open the series, the association is hosting its second annual outdoor movie night at 8:30 p.m with a screening of The Muppet Movie.

The East Richmond Community Association is thrilled to be presenting another outdoor movie that brings our community together and highlights the beautiful King George Park, said Micenko, adding there will be a booth selling popcorn, hot dogs, chips and drinks.

Due to popular demand, the entertainment again this year on July 31 is The Ultimate Elvis Tribute Show with Brian Simpson and Eli Williams.

Last year, on average, between 100 and 150 people took part in the summer series.

The park is already a busy one, but on these nights it really is busy and the crowd has lots of fun, Micenko added. The tug of war and the bubble blowing are always popular activities.

The Summer Fun Nights are held at the King George Park Gathering Place at No. 5 and Cambie roads, on Tuesdays, July 31, and Aug. 2,7 and 14 from 5 to 7:30 p.m. People are asked to bring a chair and blankets, and leave your pets at home.
