After the horrific 9.0-magnitude earthquake and tsunami decimated large regions of Japan last year, local residents and Steveston community groups came together to show their support in a charity walk.

The walk was a tremendous success, pulling in $80,000 in a single day and $127,000 during the course of the year.

Now, to mark the anniversary of the quake and tsunami, a second Steveston Cares relief event is being organized to take place March 25.

"We are trying to let them know that Steveston cares and give them some hope and let them know the world is with them," said Coun. Bill McNulty.

Following the walk last year, Richmond's Sister City Committee, Steveston Community Centre and Steveston Rotary Club adopted the children of a fishing village named Onagawa, which is about the same size of Steveston, for five years.

Onagawa lost more than 1,000 people in the March 11 disaster and has particular need for school supplies amounting to $250,000.

The March 25 fundraiser begins at Fisherman's Park at Third Avenue and Moncton Street with a 9 a.m. pancake breakfast. Then, beginning at 10 a.m., a walk around the 1 km route of Garry Point Park will be held every hour through 2 p.m.
