Steveston Rotary's own lager raised $5,000 for the Lytton wildfire victims.

The Rotary Club of Steveston is at the heart of a couple of important fundraising efforts for the victims of the Lytton wildfire.

One of them involved creating its very own beer – the Steveston Rotary Lager – while the other involves keychains.

“We partnered with the White Rock Beach Beer Company to make our own lager,” explained the club’s Sean Graham.

“Technically we couldn’t sell it, so we gifted it to people when they donate $20 and you got a six-pack.

“One of our members covered the cost of getting the beer, so 100 per cent of the donations went to the Lytton fire relief program.”

The beer sold out within two days when it was released earlier this year and raised in the region of $5,000 from 1,500 cans.

The club, however, has raised, in total, in the region of $70,000 through other donations since the campaign kicked off in the wake of the disastrous blaze that burned Lytton to the ground.

The other ongoing fundraising effort involving the Steveston Rotarians was kicked off by a counterpart in Prince George, Carol Hansson, who has been selling both BC Strong and Drive Safe keychains for $20 each, also for the displaced residents of Lytton.

Purchases can be made through e-mail money transfer, or through Hansson’s Etsy store at:

Meanwhile, Steveston Rotary is planning to release a 3,000-can run of its own beer – a Christmas Pale Ale – to benefit its Christmas Hamper program, which helps 25 to 30 local families.
